Would you like to enhance your students’ learning experience? Want them to really get immersed in your subject and give them that hands-on feeling of REAL learning and exploration?
Let us design a high-quality Creative workshop customized to fit your curriculum!
Our workshops are designed to work with the teacher to enhance any current themes or topics the kids are learning about to make it more fun. For instance, if they are learning about medieval times, we can create ceramic castles, or a shield/crest… we can make cultural connections (Aztec suns, Chinese Dragons, Native masks etc), create Egyptian Sarcophaguses, Pioneer Log Houses, etc etc.
Any topic of learning can become creative, and it is in this state where real learning blossoms. Let us show you our magic!
Here are just some of the projects we’ve done in the past:
Project 1: Model Pioneer Building
Students will research and various schools, churches and houses from the early settler/pioneer days and learn the techniques to build a 3D model of a style of their choice. They will learn about the lifestyle and how it compares to our lives today.
Something satisfying about building a house – whether real or ceramic.
Project 2: First Nations Architecture
Students will learn about some of the various First Nations architecture while building a model of a longhouse.
Project 3: False Face Society
The False Face Society is probably the best known of the medicinal societies among the Iroquois, especially for its dramatic wooden masks. The masks are used in healing rituals. Students will learn more about these masks and beliefs while designing and making their own unique healing masks.
A great way to open kids’ minds to the various different beliefs that people and cultures can hold and how they relate to the physical.
Project 4: Create a Family History Totem Pole
Totem poles were large carved poles used to display stories and family histories. Students will learn about totem poles, the symbols used within the Haida community, while creating their own totem pole about their own family or group in their community.
Another great way to show how we can bring much depth and personal meaning into the art of craft.
Project 5: Metis Canoe
To be able to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Northwest Company as voyageurs and traders, the Metis used a light canoe loaded with trade goods. In this project students will learn about the Metis life while building a model canoe in the style of the times.
An interesting way for students to really concieve of the needs of the time to actually construct everthing they used, and to compare to our current age of convenience.
Project 6: First Nations Food Storage
First Nations peoples across Canada had to deal with veryig natural environments. This resulted in a variety of methods for food gathering, growing and storage techniques. We will breifly explore these methods and then focus on the southern Ontario Huron and Iroquois. Students will explore their different pottery construction and decorative techniques.
